"Sixty" — Bob McCarroll’s Bold, Soul-Baring Departure from the Songbook

With Sixty, acclaimed composer Bob McCarroll steps away from the timeless elegance of Jazz and the American Songbook to offer something far more raw, reflective, and personal. Marking his milestone 60th year, McCarroll trades polished standards for an unflinching look at life’s beauty, pain, humor, and regret.

The journey begins with “Passion & Fury,” a gritty, Cajun-inspired tale of impulsive love and the consequences that could have defined a life—a crossroad McCarroll himself narrowly avoided. From there, “Cry” delivers a haunting meditation on aging and the fading of beauty, while “Lonely & Blue” tells a quiet, aching story of unbalanced love.

Deeply autobiographical, “Dear Mother” recounts a woman’s struggle in a toxic relationship—an all-too-true story. It’s followed by a poignant companion piece about McCarroll’s absent father, revealing a lifetime of unanswered questions and lost connections.

But it’s not all solemn reflection. With trademark wit, McCarroll closes the album with a humorous nod to the uncanny resemblance between dog owners and their pets, reminding us that even at sixty, laughter still has its place in the song.

Sixty is a turning point—not just in McCarroll’s career, but in his soul. Vulnerable, courageous, and full of heart, this collection invites listeners into a life lived fully, examined deeply, and told with striking honesty.
